The purpose of this study was two fold: to research and select an appropriate prescriptive social skills program for nine students with high incidence disabilities and to examine the results of the prescriptive classroom-based social skills intervention program for students receiving services in a self-contained, special education classroom in order to determine whether or not the program assists students in improving their social skills. Students participated in twenty-three social skills training sessions in the domains of cooperation, assertion, responsibility, and self- control, led by the researcher, during the course of the school day. Outcome measures were determined for social skills and problem behaviors through use of the Social Skills Rating System-Teacher version (Gresham and Elliott, 1990) prior to and after social skills training. A group-paired t- test using pre and post intervention scores from the Social Skills Rating System-Teacher version (Gresham and Elliott, 1990) showed an improvement in social skills as well as a decrease in problem behaviors for the participants. Limitations of the study are discussed and directions for future investigations are offered.
