Negative symptoms are part of the distinguishing characteristics of shizophrenia patients. It is associated with poor social consequences which similarly affect their capacity to communicate, their interest to interact with others, their perception of emotional experiences, their sense of pleasure, motivation and psychomotor activity. This study assessed the effectiveness of a developed Social Skills Training Program in reducing the severity of negative symptoms manifested by schizophrenia patients who were confined in Pavilion I of the National Center for Mental Health, Mandaluyong City. This made use of the Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design, with 30 participants purposively selected but randomly assigned to constitute the experimental and control groups. All of the participants continued with their anti-psychotic medications throughout the duration of the program. The experimental group participated in the Social Skills Training Program for 11 sessions aside from their usual activities in the ward. Meanwhile, the control group went on with their daily routine. The difference between the pretest and posttest scores was determined using the Negative Symptom Assessment-16 (NSA-16), with the resident doctors as raters. Results were then subjected to t-test procedures. Pretest data reveal mild to moderate degree of negative symptoms of both experimental (x= 2.68-3.55) and control (x= 2.68-3.98) groups, implying that both groups were comparable as far as their negative symptoms were concerned. There were no significant differences between the posttest scores of both groups. Meanwhile, calculated p-values of 0.02-0.05 implied significant differences in subdomains of emotional/affective dysfunction, dysfunction in sociality, motivation/hedonic dysfunction, reduced psychomotor activity and global negative symptom rating between the pretest and posttest mean scores of the experimental group except for the communication dysfunction domain which showed a non-significant rating. On the other hand, t-test for dependent samples revealed non-significant differences between the pretest and posttest mean scores of the control group after the implementation of the treatment program. In general, the developed Social Skills Training Program has proved to bring about significant results in improving the negative symptoms of the participants.
