Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has become the most prevalent developmental disorder in the United States among children (CDC, 2016). Individuals diagnosed with the disorder face many developmental challenges. While individuals on the spectrum may display varying symptoms, the most common characteristics include difficulty in social interactions, communication, and behaviors. The purpose of this paper will be to analyze the role that parents play in the development of social skills through different forms of parenting styles. Two literature reviews were conducted. The first analyzed controlling and responsive parenting to see which type of parenting fostered more social skills in their children. It found that responsive parenting was correlated to the development of more social skills while the results for controlling parenting was inconclusive. The second literature review sought to evaluate current programs that utilized a parent training component where the parent applied the majority of the interventions. It showed that all three intervention methods studied, ABA, DIR, and music therapy, were successful in developing social skills. Unique to the programs were the varying types of skills that were developed. The significance of these results can be applied to current and future services that aim to reduce the social skill delays in children with ASD.
